| 220 km north of Rarotonga is
the beautiful island of Aitutaki. A gem even by Pacific
island standards, this island is both unique and very distinctive
from the air. |
| Aitutaki is, in fact, a mini archipelago
consisting of one raised island and a string of 16 low
islands and coral reef, all encircling an incredible, vast
lagoon. The breathtaking turquoise waters and pristine
white beaches make this a ‘must-see’ destination
for any visitor to the Cook Islands. The lagoon itself
is 45 km around is abundant with a variety of colourful
fish.
Tapuaetai (One Foot Island), on the south east corner
of the lagoon and 20 minutes by fast boat from Aitutaki
itself, is perhaps the loveliest of the atolls – the
glassy water surrounding being ideal for snorkelling.
There are daily scheduled flights operated by Air Rarotonga
and as on the main island, the most preferred method
of transport is by scooter.
