Outline Itinerary [1/2] >>
Day 1: Christchurch-Canterbury Hills
After a warm-up ride in the Port Hills, set off across the Canterbury Plains, alternately cycling and driving until reaching the foothills of the spectacular Southern Alps. Here, stay overnight at an historic homestead and farm.
Day 2: Canterbury Hills-Lake Tekapo
Following breakfast prepare for a day of cycling at your own pace. The turquoise blue of Lake Tekapo is approximately 63 kms via Burkes Pass. Those who wish to can cycle the entire way at their own speed, others can enjoy the full comfort of the occasional lift. The vast MacKenzie Basin with its views of Mt Cook and the Southern Alps provides an awesome backdrop to the beautiful wild flower fringed highway, before dropping into Tekapo and the lakeside accommodation.
Day 3: Lake Tekapo-Lake Ohau
Huge glacial lakes and flat sealed hydro canal roads add interest to the day as you cycle and then walk beneath Mt Cook and the alpine village. The Hooker Valley is dominated by New Zealand highest mountain with its steep glacier sides regularly providing a spectacular sideshow. At day's end drive and cycle the final section into Lake Ohau and your lodge accommodation.
Day 4: Lake Ohau-Lake Wanaka
An early morning lakeside cycle, away from the mountains and onto Lindis Pass, the crossing into the Otago watershed. Here's a chance to freewheel past the historic gold mining areas of New Zealand's past. By coach and cycle approach Lake Wanaka and enjoy a superb final lakeside track onto your lodge accommodation for the night.
Day 5: Lake Wanaka-Queenstown
The day starts with a 25km cycle on a smooth sealed road, towards the historic Cardrona Hotel for a relaxing coffee or tea. Drive onto the Crown Range and cycle into the Queenstown basin. Via the scenic trails cycle and explore Arrowtown, a gold-mining centre of the past. By coach and bike continue on to Queenstown.
