| Day 1: |
Christchurch-Canterbury Hills
After a warm-up ride in the Port Hills, we set off across the Canterbury Plains, alternately cycling and driving until we reach the foothills of the spectacular Southern Alps. Here, we stay overnight at an historic homestead and farm. |
| Day 2: |
Canterbury Hills-Tekapo
After a traditional breakfast, we set off for a day’s cycling at your own pace. The full journey to Lake Tekapo is 63km but it is entirely up to you how much of this you wish to undertake – the back up vehicle is there, when you want it. The vast MacKenzie Basin with its distant views of Mt. Cook and the Southern Alps is an awesome backdrop to the wildflower fringed highway and will probably keep you pedalling for longer than you expect! Head into Tekapo for overnight stay by the lake. |
| Day 3: |
Tekapo-Lake Ohau
Cycle around huge glacial lakes and flat sealed hydro canal roads below Mt Cook, visiting the alpine village and enjoying the views of the Hooker Valley, which is dominated by New Zealand’s highest mountain. Drive and cycle the final section to Lake Ohau. |
| Day 4: |
Lake Ohau-Lake Wanaka
An early morning lakeside cycle, away from the mountains and onto Lindis Pass, the crossing into the Otago watershed. Here's a chance to freewheel past the historic gold mining areas of New Zealand's past. By coach and cycle we approach Lake Wanaka and enjoy a superb final lakeside track onto our lodge accommodation for the night. |
| Day 5: |
Lake Wanaka-Glenorchy
We wake up to a 20km cycle ride on a smooth sealed road to the historic Cardrona Hotel. This is the back road to Queenstown, through the scenic Crown Range and Arrowtown, once a bustling gold mining town. We forsake the bright lights of Queenstown for Glenorchy, where we stay in a mountain lodge where the superb views match the hospitality of our hosts. |
| Day 6: |
Exploring around Glenorchy
This is a day to spend as you choose – you can explore the Rees and Dart Valleys, cycling or on foot – or there are kayaking and jet boating trips on offer, all amidst the breathtakingly beautiful surrounds of Glenorchy. |
