Outline Itinerary
Day 14: Wanaka-Haast
Enjoy the quiet of the morning on a lakeside pedal along the shores of Lake Hawea. Drive to the top of Haast Pass, then cycle down through the ‘Gates of Haast’ to the flats of the Landsborough River for lunch. After lunch, continue cycling through the World Heritage rainforests to Haast, the headquarters for this important conservation area, for overnight stay.
Day 15: Haast-Fox Glacier
Beautiful forest and coastal landscapes dominate the first half of today on the ride to Bruce Bay. Then drive to the Fox Glacier, taking a guided walk on the glacier. Optional helicopter trips are also available. If time permits, a walk around stunning Lake Matheson, often rewards hikers with the most wonderful views of the Southern Alps, mirrored on its tranquil surface.
Day 16: exploring around the glaciers
With a second night in this superb place, take the chance to cycle the road to Franz Josef Glacier, from where a walk leads to a viewpoint over the glacier’s advancing snout.
Day 17: exploring inland
Spend the day exploring by bus and by bike the undiscovered back country that lies inland from the West Coast. Cycle through ancient podocarp forests, scattered with the lost dreams of one-time gold miners, to Lakes Ianthe, Kaniere and Mahinapua.
Day 18: Lake Brunner-Christchurch
Cycle to Lake Brunner and perhaps take a swim and witness some memorable views. Then, head back to the West Coast Highway, joining the coast to coast route. Through sweeping rural landscapes, cycle part of the famous race route and gradually gain height on the approach to Arthurs Pass and the central Southern Alps. Cross the pass by bus and then join the world famous TranzAlpine Express for the last part of the journey into Christchurch before being dropped off at your accommodation.
