| Day 1: |
Arrive Nelson
Arrive in Nelson and pick up rental vehicle. Nelson is located in the northwest corner at the top of the South Island. Its area is said to resemble the prow of the waka (canoe) of Maui, an important figure in Maori mythology. Nelson was known by the Maori as Te Tau Ihu o Te Waka a Maui (the tip of the nose of the canoe of Maui). The landscape covers wide plains, rivers, golden sandy beaches, hills and mountains. As well as being the country’s eighth largest wine region, it is also home to Abel Tasman National Park. There are more working artists in Nelson than any other part of New Zealand.
Enjoy a two hour chartered cruise in Nelson Harbour with your skipper Robin. Cat Sailing is a Nelson-based skippered cruise operation offering tours to Abel Tasman and Marlborough Sounds. |
| Day 2: |
Exploring Abel Tasman National Park
Depart accommodation, drive to Kaiteriteri (approx 20 mins) to meet Wilson’s guide for your Abel Tasman Coast Track experience.
The Abel Tasman Coast Track is one of New Zealand’s ‘Great Walks’ and extends for 51km. It is renowned for the golden beaches, clear aqua waters and granite cliffs it passes through. All streams are bridged but there are tidal crossings which can only be crossed within a few hours either side of low tide.
Your full day Guided Kayak and Walk excursion starts at Kaiteriteri. Receive a full briefing and settle into a stable kayak. Join your guide for the next 2.5 hours to explore the Kaiteriteri Baty area. Return to Kaiteriteri by 11:30 and join the boat trip to Onetahuti beach, via the Tonga island Seal colony. Walk independently for 1.5 hours to Bark Bay before joining the boat again at 15:40. Cruise back to Kaiteriteri arriving at 4.30pm. |
| Day 3: |
Nelson
Spend the day at leisure – you may like to explore more of Abel Tasman National Park. Afterwards make your way back to Nelson. |
| Day 4: |
Nelson-Kaikoura (296 km)
Drive to Kaikoura, renowned as the Whale Watching capital of New Zealand. The dramatic scenery of the coast and its backdrop of steep mountains, provide excellent hiking and the chance to ski New Zealand’s newest slopes, as well as some excellent seafood - it is not hard to see why Kaikoura is so popular with visitors.
This afternoon enjoy a Whale Watch excursion by boat. |
| Day 5: |
Kaikoura-Christchurch-Queenstown (by road & air)
Drive to Christchurch, drop off your rental vehicle and take a domestic flight to Queenstown. Arrive in Queenstown and collect a new rental vehicle.
Alpine air, views across snow capped mountains, and clear lakes, Queenstown is located on the shores of Lake Wakatipu, overlooked by the Southern Alps.
This afternoon enjoy a scenic heli-flight to Milford Sound with landing (2.5 hours). Sit back and experience the grandeur of the Southern Alps, over glaciers, Milford Sound, rainforest and frozen lakes to the heart of Fiordland.
Later on this afternoon enjoy a ride on the Shotover Jet. Jet boats can safely travel at great speed over incredibly shallow water, providing a thrilling way to explore New Zealand’s rivers. The Shotover Jet takes you on an exciting ride up one of the great gold bearing rivers, where you will stop to look at some of the gold rush relics. Transfers from Queenstown are included. Warm clothing recommended

Ascending gently at first to get beyond the ski area you work your way up past Lake Alta and on towards the highest of The Remarkables summits. At every step you are rewarded with breathtaking views that only get better. |
