Responsible Tourism

DTW Statement Page 1 of 4

Discover the World (DTW) recognises that as a Tour Operator we have a responsibility to respect other people’s places and way of life, and acknowledge that tours operated by DTW can have an environmental, social and economic impact on the destinations involved. We aim to be responsible in our dealings on each of these levels and to encourage and assist other companies, customers and local suppliers to recognise and participate in our common responsibilities.

Ecotourism is one of the fast growing parts of the tourism industry. Many people go on our nature-related trips, visiting the protected areas and wildlife that conservation organisations such as Born Free Foundation and the Whale & Dolphin Conservation Society are striving to protect. Sadly, there is no doubt that irresponsible and uncontrolled ecotourism can create, rather than remedy environmental problems. However with proper planning, it can be a powerful tool for conservation.

Firstly, it can provide local people with a source of income and once communities make the connection between nature and an improved standard of living; half the conservation battle is won. It can also raise urgent-needed funds for research projects, and finally, it can stimulate a real appreciation of nature, and a much better awareness of conservation issues.

For ecotourism to be effective, it has to be ecologically sensitive and carefully planned. DTW are aware that if ecotourism were to grow in an area, without regulation, it could easily become as harmful as other forms of mainstream tourism. Therefore we strive to protect and preserve the environment, it’s flora, fauna and landscapes; to respect local cultures, traditions, religion and heritage; to benefit local communities, both economically and socially; to conserve natural resources, both in our offices and at our destinations; and finally, to minimise pollution through noise, waste disposal and congestion.

Whilst we recognise that a vital part of any holiday is relaxation and ‘getting away from it all’, we also try to encourage our clients to be aware of their impact in their destination, on the host community as well as the wildlife including rare and fragile ecosystems. DTW has been actively supporting conservation since the company was first established, and one of our main aims is to help ensure that wild places and wild creatures are still there for future travellers to enjoy.
