| Although it is possible to travel around New Zealand and see most of the sights with a normal car, you may find that you are sharing them with quite a few other travellers. |
| By choosing a four wheel drive trip, you’ll be opening up new doors, which will take you off the main routes to places that most other visitors don’t get to see. Where possible these itineraries choose dirt roads and four wheel drive tracks, avoiding the busier sealed roads. Of course this isn’t always possible so you can expect to be doing some conventional driving as well. |
Are special driving skills required?
These itineraries are all self-drive. A full UK driving license or International License is needed and you must be over 21 years of age. No special driving skills are needed and you will soon get a feel for driving on gravel. Extra care is always advisable when you are driving on dirt roads. |
What are the trips like?
The itineraries follow set routes. Some are old trails forged by the early European settlers, which are now little used because of more direct alternative routes. With pre-booked accommodation, often in places of particular character and scenic location, you won’t have to worry about where to stay at the end of the day. If you have a sense of adventure but don’t necessarily want to rough it, then one of these specially designed itineraries could be the answer. The ‘Hike and Drive’ itinerary also includes suggested hikes for those who want to be out and about on foot. |
What about the accommodation and meals?
The accommodation is of a good standard throughout and rooms are with private facilities. We include a variety of accommodation, from lodges, hotels and motels to guesthouses and farm or homestay. The ‘Four by Four Experience’ itinerary includes a higher standard of accommodation and a few evening meals are included on some of the itineraries, while others are on room only basis and give you complete freedom to eat where you please. |
