| Day 1: |
Auckland-Rotorua (230 km)
Collect your rental vehicle at Auckland Airport. Head south through the farming country of the Waikato to Rotorua. Here you can explore bubbling mud pools and geysers and experience an optional ‘hangi’, a Maori feast. |
| Day 2: |
Rotorua-Napier (330 km)
Today’s route traverses the heart of Urewera National Park, a sparsely inhabited region of extensive native forest and lakes. Continue to Napier, situated in the Hawke’s Bay wine region. |
| Day 3: |
Napier-Mt. Ruapehu (200 km)
Drive the historic Gentle Annie Road, which used to link inland farms with Napier’s harbour. Continue to the Desert Road, from where you will see the snow-capped peak of Mt. Ruapehu. |
| Day 4: |
Mt. Ruapehu-Wellington (310 km)
Take the Old Post Road, travelling alongside the scenic Wanganui River. Continue south to Wellington, New Zealand’s capital. We recommend a visit to Te Papa, the National Museum. |
| Day 5: |
Wellington-Cook Strait-St. Arnaud (160km)
Drop off your rental vehicle and take the early ferry across the Cook Strait. Pick up your second vehicle and follow the Queen Charlotte Drive for stunning views of the Sound. Then head inland to Nelson Lakes National Park. |
| Day 6: |
St. Arnaud-Greymouth (280 km)
Drive through scenic Buller Gorge to Westport and visit the Cape Foulwind seal colony. View the Pancake Rocks at Punakaiki before continuing to Greymouth. |
