Outline Itinerary [2/4] >>
Day 8: hike the Tongariro Crossing
The full day Tongariro Crossing is one of the most famous walks in New Zealand, providing the opportunity to view colourful craters, lakes and bubbling hot pools. Grade 4 hike.
Day 9: Tongariro National Park-Wellington (280 km)
Travel back downriver to rejoin your vehicle. Drive to Wellington, where a visit to the National Museum, Te Papa, is recommended.
Day 10: Wellington-Queen Charlotte Sound
Drop off your vehicle and board the ferry to Picton. On arrival you will be transferred by to your accommodation in Queen Charlotte Sound.
Day 11: hiking the Queen Charlotte Walkway
A 5-6 hour walk on this renowned coastal track offers superb views of the Sound. Afterwards you will be transferred by boat to Picton. Grade 2-3 hike.
Day 12: Queen Charlotte Sound Picton -Abel Tasman National Park (190 km)
Return to Picton by boat and then drive the scenic route to Abel Tasman National Park for a 2-night stay.
Day 13: hiking in Abel Tasman National Park
This beautiful region is famed for its sandy beaches, lush coastal forests and turquoise seas. Today hike part of the coastal track, which will take 5-6 hours. Grade 3-4 hike.
Day 14: Abel Tasman-West Coast (315 km)
Drive to the rugged West Coast. Visit the Cape Foulwind seal colony and curious blowholes and pancake rocks at Punakaiki.
Day 15: hiking Paparoa National Park
Paparoa’s limestone rocks, pristine rivers and lush forests give it a special character. Enjoy a 4-7 hour hike on quiet trails. Grade 3-4 hike.
