Outline Itinerary [3/4] >>
Day 16: Paparoa National Park-Franz Josef Glacier (225 km)
Continue south to Franz Josef, where you stay overnight. Take a short walk to the snout of this impressive glacier, which tumbles 2500m to the valley floor. Grade 2 hike.
Day 17: Franz Josef Glacier-Haast (150 km)
Drive to Haast and spend the afternoon exploring ancient forests and wild surf-pounded beaches. You may spot Fiordland crested penguins, dolphins and seals. Grade 1-2 hike.
Day 18: Haast-Queenstown (220 km)
Drive over the scenic Haast Pass and continue to Queenstown, where you spend the next 2 nights.
Day 19: Queenstown
A free day to enjoy some of the activities on offer in New Zealand’s ‘Adventure Capital’. Options include bungy jumping, river rafting, lake cruises or a gondola ride.
Day 20: Queenstown-Milford Sound-Te Anau (290 km)
Drive to awe-inspiring Milford Sound. Take an optional boat trip (at extra cost) on the Sound to enjoy the superb scenery and wildlife. Return to Te Anau for a 2-night stay.
Day 21: hike the Milford Track
Travel by boat across Lake Te Anau to the start of the Milford Track. Hike through forests along the lake shore to the Neale Burn River (from April to October take an alternative hike in Doubtful Sound). Grade 2-3 hike.
Day 22: Te Anau-Omarama (340 km)
Travel over little-used 4x4 tracks through Central Otago. End the day in Omarama, known for its bizarre clay cliffs.
