Outline Itinerary [1/2] >>
Day 1: Auckland
Upon arrival you will be met and transferred to your hotel. Rest of the day at leisure.
Day 2: Auckland-Tairua (150 km)
Collect your vehicle and mountain bike and head to the Coromandel Peninsula via Thames, one of the original gold rush towns and well known for its colonial architecture. At Tairua you explore by bike climbing Paku Hill for great views.
Day 3: Tairua
Spend a day exploring the peninsula by car or bike. Visit Hot Water Beach, Cathedral Cove and Hahei Beach.
Day 4: Tairua-Rotorua (300 km)
Drive to one of New Zealand’s most visited destinations, Rotorua. Recommended sites include the thermal area of Te Puia, which is home of several geysers, the Polynesian Spa and the Maori Arts & Crafts Institute. You may wish to experience Maori culture during an evening Hangi and concert.
Day 5: Rotorua-Napier (340 km)
Head south via the thermal park of Wairakei and nearby Huka Falls before reaching the town of Napier, noted for its art deco architecture.
Day 6: Napier
Spend the day discovering this charming town located in the heart of Hawkes Bay. Take to your bikes and explore the many wineries of this region or head out to Cape Kidnappers where New Zealand’s largest gannet colony can be observed up close.
Day 7: Napier-Wellington (323 km)
Continue the wine theme en route to Wellington, visiting Martinborough a relatively new wine region. Spend the rest of the day exploring New Zealand’s scenic capital. Visit Te Papa, the National Museum and enjoy fine dining opportunities.
Day 8: Wellington-Blenheim (30 km)
Drop off your rental vehicle and take the early ferry across the Cook Strait. Pick up your second vehicle and drive to Blenheim. Take to the bikes for a ride around the vineyards or cycle the Queen Charlotte Drive around the many bays and coves of the Queen Charlotte Sound.
Day 9: Abel Tasman National Park (190 km)
Head to Marahau at the edge of Abel Tasman National Park, from where you can explore on foot, by bike or canoe or simply relax on the golden sands of Kaiteriteri beach.
Day10: Abel Tasman National Park
Enjoy a day at leisure where you may like to cycle from Marahau to Kaiteriteri Beach returning via Riwaka (approx 30 km). Alternatively take a boat excursion into the park where you can hike along the coastal paths and swim in the clear waters.
Day11: Abel Tasman-Punakaiki (315 km)
Drive via Murchinson and along the Buller River to the rugged West Coast for a two night stay. Visit the seal colony at Cape Foulwind and the famous Pancake Rocks.
