The Milford Track

Outline Itinerary [1/2] >>
Day 1: Queenstown-Glade House Lodge
(1.6km/1 mile – 20 minutes walk)
Travel from Queenstown to Te Anau by coach arriving in time for a light lunch and meeting up with the rest of the group. A short drive to Te Anau Downs harbour is followed by a transfer by launch to the spectacular northern end of the lake. This is the start of the trail, but today’s walk is short and in just 20 minutes, we are at Glade House, our first lodge.
Day 2: Glade House-Pompolona Lodge
(16km/10 miles – 5-7 hours walk)
We set off and make our way up the Clinton River through its beautiful beech forests to the lunch stop at Hirere Falls. As the forests give way to open meadow, the dramatic scenery of this sheer-sided valley becomes more and more visible forming an ice-carved gorge as we near our next overnight stop at Pompolona Lodge.
Day 3: Pompolona Lodge-Quintin Lodge
(15km/9miles – 6-8 hours walk)
This is the most demanding day of the trek. Leaving the lodge we continue up the Clinton Valley to Lake Mintaro. The trail now winds in a series of zig-zags to reach Mackinnon Pass, where the rewards are lunch and – if the weather is clear – some stunning views. Arriving at Quintin Lodge after a rocky descent following Roaring Burn, we’ll have tea. We then take a 90 minutes detour to 560m Sutherland Falls, the highest waterfall in New Zealand.
Day 4: Quintin Lodge-Mitre Peak Lodge
(21km/13 miles – 6-8 hours walk)
The last day on the trail, can be an awe-inspiring walk as the precipitous valley sides stream with waterfalls after heavy rain. We walk down the Arthur Valley to Boatshed, where we stop for refreshments. We continue past MacKay Falls and Bell Rock to follow the shore of Lake Ada to our lunch spot at another stunning waterfall, the Giant’s Gate. From here it is about 90 minutes to Sandfly Point on the shore of Milford Sound. Legend has it that the Maori’s goddess Te Hine-nui-te-po released the sandfly here to stop men lingering too long in the beauty of Fiordland. The launch will meet us here for the short ride across to Mitre Peak Lodge, where we enjoy a celebratory dinner.
