Secret South Safari

This itinerary takes you to areas seldom visited by other travellers on the epic South Island. After exploring the shimmering alpine lakes and rugged mountains of Fjordland National Park, you’ll kayak beneath massive sea cliffs on the world-famous Milford Sound while keeping an eye out for basking seals and playful dolphins.

From there you’ll head for the spectacular Catlins coast, home of beautiful beaches, luxurious rain forest and rare species of sea lions, dolphins and penguins. More stunning alpine vistas await you from the rocky slopes of the Ohau range, with views of turquoise glacial lakes and the snow-capped peaks of Mt. Cook. The trip ends in Christchurch, but not before a relaxing dip in a refreshing Emerald Pool. This is certainly one of New Zealand’s most beautiful, varied and interesting hiking tours.

Practicalities
Food is bought on a kitty system, to which everyone contributes about NZ$20 a day, which also covers any camping fees. Naturally, everyone helps out with preparing the meals and other daily tasks. This is very much a participatory trip, though of course your guide is always at hand to supervise.

There is a little backpacking involved on this trip, but most of the more strenuous walks are just with a day sack. You must, however, have a good level of fitness to take part in the trip.
