The Hollyford Track

This is a moderate trek at low altitude, which follows the course of the Hollyford River from deep in the Southern Alps to the Tasman Sea. The route is unlike any other and offers ever-changing views of inland mountains, glaciers, rainforests, rivers and lakes, complemented by the reefs, sand dunes and surf of the coast.

The trek begins in ancient beech forests beneath the towering granite of the Darran Mountains. Following the clear waters of the Hollyford River, the route passes in view of Fiordland’s two highest peaks, Mt Tutoko (2746m) and Mt Madeline (2537m) and the roaring cascade of Hidden Falls, which emerge from a hanging valley through a narrow chasm of granite.

Progressing towards Lake McKerrow and the thundering surf of the Tasman Sea, you pass traces of early settlement, which provide intriguing glimpses into the aspirations of the explorers and first inhabitants, who succumbed to the area’s splendid isolation. With colonies of penguins (July-December) and fur seals pupping in January, as well as abundant forest birds and flora, this trek is especially suited to nature enthusiasts.

Practicalities
This tour includes transportation to the start and from the end of the trail from Queenstown, easily accessed from other parts of New Zealand, by coach.

Breakfast, a packed lunch and a superb evening meal with wine are provided each day during the trek.
