Volcanoes & Rainforest

From local specialists Hiking New Zealand, this exploratory trip takes in the wilder areas of the North Island. Though aimed at fit walkers, who are prepared to do some backpacking, you don’t need to have previous experience of this kind of trip.

Practicalities
Food is bought through a kitty system, to which everyone contributes about NZ$20 a day, which also covers any camping fees.

Naturally, everyone helps out with preparing the meals and other daily tasks. This is very much a participatory trip, though of course your guide is always at hand to supervise.

Starting from Auckland and ending at Wellington, the itinerary focuses on three main areas – the wilderness surrounds of Rotorua, New Zealand’s best known geothermal area, Tongariro National Park, with its stunning volcanic landscapes and Mt. Egmont National Park, whose far reaching views are legendary.
