Farewell Spit Wader Watch Tour, Golden Bay

Farewell Spit has been a sanctuary since the 1930's and is home to over 90 species of bird, most importantly the waders. The tidal range is huge - at low tide over 9km of sandflats sweep out to the clear blue waters of Golden Bay allowing you to see many of the Arctic waders feeding.

Nelson Helicopters were contracted in the filming of the Fellowship of the Ring, and not only flew the cast and crew to the sets, but were also used to film the aerial shots. Travel from the base at Wakefield to the areas now world famous as Dimrill Dale, Chetwood Forest and Eregion Hills. See dramatic limestone rocks and strange pinnacle rock formations all used in the trilogy. Includes a landing at Dimrill Dale conditions permitting, and time for photo taking.

The valley has the most extensive collection of native ferns in the region, plus a diverse range of plants and trees. You will be in charge of your own four wheel motorbike, ride as a passenger or enjoy the comparative luxury of the fun buggy. Visit the giant Matai trees and native forest trails, the Skywire and Tree Tops Café. The ride takes you through fields of sheep and along the banks of a trout-filled river.
